Hurricane Katrina (Caught off gaurd?)

A year is past and I sit here to reflect on what I felt when Katrina was heading for the gulf. At first I was apathetic and then, as the hurricane went from cat 3 to cat 5, I got worried.

When the hurricane hit...well that is well known history. It is what happened afterwards is what I am finding difficult to deal with.

In the first few weeks we watched FEMA block almost all attempts to help. News stories and camera crews were showing FEMA agents turning around buses full of food, water, and help. It wasn't until the 8th day were we allowed to help. By then, it was to late.

Then FEMA and the President made claims that this was something that they couldn't plan for. That was their reason why things were going so poorly. Now I find that this is not the truth.

So vulnerable, in fact, that earlier this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency ranked the potential damage to New Orleans as among the three likeliest, most catastrophic disasters facing this country.

The other two? A massive earthquake in San Francisco, and, almost prophetically, a terrorist attack on New York City. - HOUSTON CHRONICLE 12-1-2001

Then attacks on the Governor (Blanco) that she didn't handle the preparation of the storm. Funny, I remember her telling everyone to split and later I found that she tried to get FEMA ready for the storm. Click here for the PDF format of her request to President Bush to have FEMA on standby by.

And as I write this I am hearing many callers call into the Washington Post show(?) on C-Span saying that Mayor Negan had some of the levees blown up. Now I am not going to say that may or may not be true. I take a natural stance on issues until I can get more evidence. I do remember 60 minutes saying that there was explosive residue on the debris from the levees. So this is really raising my eye brow at the moment.

I'll post more if I come across anything
